Since 1987, Campus Compact has conducted an annual membership survey with the purpose of calculating student and faculty involvement in service and service-learning, understanding faculty roles and rewards, measuring campus infrastructure for community engagement and assessing satisfaction with Campus Compact programs and services.

California Campus Compact would like to thank everyone who completed the 2011 Campus Compact Membership Survey. Unfortunately, we did not receive responses from 50% of our member campuses and, therefore, will not be receiving any California-specific data from National Campus Compact. The highlights from the 2010 survey are below.

The 2010 survey results demonstrate the significant achievements of our member campuses in the areas of community service, service-learning, civic engagement, institutional support and campus-community partnerships.  California Campus Compact member campuses outpaced the national average in almost every category of the survey.

Among the key findings:

  • Students from California Campus Compact member institutions contributed an estimated $1.3 billion in service hours to their communities during the 2009-2010 academic year.
  • Thirty-nine percent (39%) of students per member campus participated in community service, service-learning or civic engagement activities, performing an average of 7.1 hours of work each week.
  • On average, California Campus Compact member institutions offered 78 service-learning courses per campus – 14 more than the national average of 64.
  • 93 percent of the California member institutions have a full-time staff member dedicated to directing service, service-learning and/or civic engagement activities as compared with 71 percent nationally.
  • 90 percent of California respondents reported that their institutions supported faculty involvement in civic engagement programs and teaching service-learning courses through providing faculty development workshops/fellowships, as compared to 70 percent nationally.
  • California alumni continue their service beyond their campus experiences. On average, 2,409 alumni per campus have entered public service careers, with 74 entering AmeriCorps programs and 158 entering the Peace Corps.
